Life on the Wing: Swallows, Swifts, and Nightjars

Barn Swallow by Ken Miracle

Life on the Wing: Swallows, Swifts and Nightjars

With John Rakestraw

April 28, 7:00 - 8:30 pm MT on Zoom

Which Idaho bird can remain in the air for up to eight months? Which one can sleep for weeks at a time? Which ones nest underground? All of these are aerial insectivores; swallows, swifts, and nightjars, that eat, drink, and even sleep in flight. This class will introduce you to all the members of this group that call Idaho home, showing you how they live, and how to find and identify each one.

A companion field trip to Dedication Point Overlook and Swan Falls Park will be held on May 4. Space is limited. You’ll get the field trip registration link when you register for the class.

John Rakestraw was born and raised in Indiana, and he worked as a naturalist in Kansas and Ohio before settling in Oregon.  John is a freelance writer, author of Birding Oregon and a regular teacher for Bird Alliance of Oregon and Golden Eagle Audubon Society.

The class will be on Zoom. All registrants will be provided a link to the class recording.

This class is open to everyone.

Registration fee:

  • Non-members - $30

  • Golden Eagle Audubon Society current members (as of date of registration) - $20
